The Leadership Alliance Symposium 2008

July 25-27, 2008.
The Marriott Hartford Downtown/Connecticut Convention Center
Hartford, Connecticut

When the Alliance was created in 1992, the purpose was to encourage America’s brightest minority students to pursue graduate education at the nation’s most competitive institutions and to support them in this pursuit. The central conviction that the consortium embodied suggested that with investment in identifying, nurturing, recruiting and training, one day, there would be an emerging rank of eminent scholars who would be ready to become part of the next generation of educational leaders and scholars.

Now, fifteen years after the creation of the Leadership Alliance consortium, it is time to celebrate an important milestone – more than 100 Alliance alumni have completed a PhD or MD/PhD! This swell of alumni is the initial vanguard of successive cohorts that have entered advance training of all types in record numbers. More than 60% of all Leadership Alliance summer research early identification program alumni have entered a myriad of graduate and professional degree programs. In addition to the 100+ PhDs and MD/PhDs, the Alliance has identified more than 150 others who have completed MDs, and more than 100 other young professionals in allied health professions, the legal profession, and professional masters disciplines. But it is the research doctorate degree recipients – the PhDs and MD/PhDs – that are highlighted here, because individuals at this level of achievement have the potential to fulfill the promise of leadership in the academy that the creation of the Alliance envisioned.
