Past Alliance Director Now UM Vice Provost and Dean

Dr. James H. Wyche, former executive director of the Leadership Alliance and associate provost at Brown University, has been appointed Vice Provost and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami (UM), effective August 1, 2002. Dr. Wyche, who was the Alliance's director since its inception in 1992, spent last year as the interim president of our member institution Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi.

For 14 years, Dr. Wyche was an associate provost and professor of medical science in the department of molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry at Brown University. At UM, he will run the largest of the university's 14 schools and colleges. According to The Miami Herald, Dr. Wyche's new position makes him the first African American dean of an undergraduate school in UM's 75-year history.

"Dr. Wyche is a fine scientist and noted academic leader," said UM President Donna E. Shalala. "We will benefit tremendously from his expertise and leadership on the issues of science and diversity in higher education."

Dr. Wyche, who will continue to lead a research team at UM, is a nationally and internationally known researcher in the field of cell biology as well as an active member of the American Society for Cell Biology and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

"James Wyche is a great scientist and a born leader," said Dr. Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Founder of the Leadership Alliance and a member of its External Board. "(UM is) getting a hard-working, conscientious, collegial, well-connected straight-shooter—a man of integrity."
