A program in the Humanities and Social Sciences -- (not currently in operation). During the summers 2000 and 2001, six faculty and eighteen undergraduate students traveled to the University of London's School for Oriental and African Studies for a one-week orientation in African language and culture. They then went on to one of six African universities in Tanzania, Ghana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe to conduct research in their fields. The Ford Foundation funded this program, which concluded in the summer of 2001.

Research programs, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and conducted through Alliance-members Cornell University, Howard University, the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University, which allowed minority scientists and students to play an active role in important biomedical research projects in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

The Alliance received support from Citigroup for student and faculty summer research exchanges between Alliance member institutions and the seven tribal colleges in Montana to conduct work with Montana State University through the American Indian Research Opportunities (AIRO) Program. Citigroup has also funded the design of two visiting lecturer facilities that will be used by the AIRO program. The Leadership Alliance is currently seeking construction funds for this important project.

Since 1996, the Alliance has administered predoctoral and dissertation fellowships of $12,000 each that support first year graduate students and allow Ph.D. candidates the financial freedom to concentrate on completing their dissertations. Like the GRE Preparatory Program, the Irene Diamond Fund initially funded these fellowships; the Alliance is currently seeking new donors to continue these important programs.

The Alliance has sponsored and funded tutorials and preparatory programs for Alliance student alumni interested in taking the Graduate Record Examination, and is currently seeking new donors to continue this important program.
