Founded in 1764, Brown University was the
third college in New England and the seventh in America, welcoming
students of all religious persuasions. A commitment to diversity and
intellectual freedom remains a hallmark of the University today.
While its facilities and programs have expanded enormously over
the years, Brown has chosen to keep its enrollment relatively small:
5,500 undergraduates, 1,350 graduates, and 300 students in the Brown
Medical School. The University is situated on a historic residential
hill overlooking downtown Providence, Rhode Island, a city of some
160,000 people. The main campus covers nearly 140 acres, all within
a 10-minute walk of its hub, the College Green.
Brown Medical School is nationally known for its expertise in family
medicine and primary care. It is one of the nation's youngest medical
schools, having granted its first M.D. degrees in 1975. As the only
medical school in the state of Rhode Island, Brown Medical School
and its affiliated hospitals have been a catalyst for significant
improvement in the quality of the state's health policy and services.
